Coffee Roasting - SR540's First Roast

Roaster

Fresh Roast SR540 ($189)

Beans

Sumatra Aceh Takengon from Happy Mug

These came as part of a sampler. I picked these for the first batch because I don’t want to sacrifice my Ethiopian beans for learning experience.

Knobs and Buttons

Roast In Progress

The flakes are chaff from the beans.

Batch #1 - Details

Fan: 9 Power: 5 Timer: 15 (this is just the max time, going to use a stopwatch app on my phone) 90 grams of beans 2:00 - turn power to 9 4:24 - cool

Batch #1 - Results

Not drinkable. The insides of the beans are rock hard because the beans weren’t cooked all the way through.

Batch #2 - Details

Power: 5 (less power than last time) 2:21 - heard first crack (around the same time as last time) 5:13 - cool (another minute)

Batch #2 - Results

About the same as last time.

Batch #3 - Details

Power: 9 (more power this time) 4 oz of beans (more beans) 1:00 - turn fan to 5 (so less heat is lost) let temp get to 450 (quick right turn to see temp) 3:30 - turned fan up to 9 after first crack (reduce heat) 6:00 - cool (not totally sure whether 2nd crack finished)

Batch #3 - Results

Much better. The insides of the beans got cooked this time. Lowering the fan speed helped it get up to temp.

Final Product

Taste: Not bad
